My name is Caroline Dennett. I am a junior at Westborough High School. This year, I have been a student in Facing History and Ourselves, a class designed to teach you about the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a terrible tragedy. In order to understand it, you must first learn about people: their prejudices, how easily they can be influenced and manipulated, and what they are capable of. Only then can you begin to learn about what it happened. It is impossible to understand it; it is simply beyond comprehension. The cruelty of human beings is sickening. Facing History and Ourselves is so much more than learning the facts: it is discovering yourself and remembering what happened. I now know why Mr. Gallagher thought it was so important for every student to take the course. It helps you understand that you can make a difference. It is so easy to lose sight of what is important and to not do what you think is right. I originally chose this course because I have always been fascinated by the Holocaust and how such a terrible thing could have been allowed to happen.  I also knew that Mr. Gallagher was passionate about the course and its impact upon students. I am so grateful that I could take this class, with a teacher who gives us the chance to form our own opinions. Knowing that my opinion matters makes me feel like it is possible for me to make a difference.
